1894 S Barber Dime
His majesty’s mint marks first appeared in 1885 on Canadian coins. Augustus G. Heaton, a numismatist by avocation and professional artist by trade, published his Treatise on Mint Marks in 1893.
When a “CC” was seen at that time it denoted Carson City, Nevada, where a mint was established and operated from 1870 until 1893. Of particular interest recently has been the 1894-S dime, which is not only well known as a member of this generation, but also considered to be one of the most well-known rarities in America.
The San Francisco Mint coined twenty-four dimes. Of those, two of the twenty-four were sent to the Mint director in Washington, D.C., on June 9, 1894, as part of the special assay. That left a total count of 22 coins.
As part of the annual assay, one 1894-S dime was submitted to the Philadelphia Mint Superintendent on June 28th, 1894. That would have left a net of 21 coins at that time due to the assay process. However, so far only 9 dimes are known to exist.
